AAU Winter Explosion West: Where Styles Collide and Truth Shows Up

Las Vegas has a way of exposing the truth.

At the AAU Winter Explosion West, there was no hiding behind familiarity, comfort, or regional bias. Teams traveled in. Styles clashed. Players were forced to adjust on the fly. West Coast pace met Midwest toughness. East Coast physicality tested finesse. That is exactly what an evaluation environment is supposed to do—stress the game and see who still plays it the right way.

This stop of the Winter Explosion series did exactly that. It created a competitive ecosystem where players had to problem-solve, process speed, manage contact, and impact winning without being spoon-fed advantages.

Below are detailed player evaluations from a weekend that was rich in substance, competitiveness, and long-term projection.

THIS IS SOME OF THE BALLERS!

PLAYER EVALUATIONS

Dakota Ruffin | Vegas Elite | 2030

Ruffin immediately jumps off the page physically—long, explosive, and powerful off the bounce. She consistently weaves through traffic with ease, using a combination of stride length, body control, and burst to get downhill. What stands out most is how quickly she converts defense into offense. A defensive rebound instantly becomes a fast break opportunity with her pushing the tempo herself.

She is an impactful on-ball defender who applies pressure without gambling and an alert help defender who understands rotations. Her athleticism is obvious, but it’s her ability to apply it within the flow of the game that separates her. She doesn’t need plays run for her to impact winning.

Cambree Zwick | Inspired Athletics | 2030

Zwick is the definition of a true guard. She plays with pace, poise, and clarity. Extremely skilled and fundamentally sound, she consistently operates off two feet, keeps her dribble alive, and reads defenses a step ahead.

Her floater game is polished and purposeful, not flashy. She sees the floor exceptionally well and delivers passes on time and on target. What truly stands out is how rarely she makes mistakes—she values possessions and understands game management. A natural leader who balances scoring and facilitation seamlessly.

Kyonnie Tyson | East Coast United | 2032

Tyson brings an imposing physical presence and relentless force to every possession. She attacks the glass with power and intent and plays through contact without hesitation. While her handle is still developing, her motor and aggression allow her to overwhelm defenders—she goes through people, not around them.

She plays with urgency and physicality that can shift momentum. Her effort level never dips, and her willingness to embrace contact makes her extremely difficult to neutralize.

Nyla Romero | Inspired Athletics | 2032

Nyla Romero is the type of guard that winning programs love to build around.

She immediately stands out with her length and bounce, but what really separates her is how she applies her athleticism with purpose. Defensively, she is a flat-out clamp. She slides her feet, uses her length to bother ball handlers, and takes pride in making life uncomfortable on the perimeter. She doesn’t just guard—she disrupts.

Offensively, Romero plays with maturity well beyond her years. She advances the ball early, understands pace, and doesn’t rush possessions. There’s patience to her game, but also real skill. She confidently knocked down threes, created her own offense with creative pull-ups off the bounce, and showed the ability to slash to the basket and finish through contact. Those weren’t easy buckets—those were tough finishes that came from strength, balance, and body control.

What ties it all together is her winning mindset. She competes on every possession, impacts the game on both ends, and consistently makes plays that help her team—not just her stat line. Long, athletic, skilled, and reliable under pressure, Nyla Romero is a guard you trust when the game tightens up.

She’s not just talented.

She’s a winner.

Amina Wade | Essence | 2032

Wade’s motor is elite. She is a pure athlete with toughness that shows up on every possession. Around 5’9”–5’10”, she competes well above her size by attacking rebounds in traffic, sprinting the floor, and defending with purpose.

She plays both ends at a high level and does not pick and choose her spots—she impacts winning continuously. Her competitiveness and willingness to do the hard things consistently separate her from typical athletes at her age.

Tatum Gordon | Inspired Athletics | 2032

Elite is not an overstatement here. Gordon plays the game with a level of command, IQ, and maturity that is rare. Her footwork is precise, her reads are advanced, and she understands spacing and timing at an exceptional level.

She is vocal, unselfish, and fully in control of tempo. An elite passer and scorer who impacts the game defensively as well. Her motor never stops, and her basketball intelligence is off the charts. She doesn’t just play the game—she conducts it.

Moriah Burts | Vegas Elite | 2031

Burts is a composed floor general who consistently gets into the paint and creates quality looks for teammates. She understands angles, timing, and pace, which allows her to make high-percentage decisions.

She pairs her playmaking with a reliable floater and a confident three-point shot. Her presence settles the offense, and she consistently delivers structure and rhythm.

Peyton Phillips | Essence | 2032

Phillips is a 6’4” lefty with soft hands and excellent touch. She runs the floor hard, keeps the ball high, and uses the backboard effectively. Her ability to finish with touch around the rim is advanced for her age.

As her footwork and balance continue to develop, her ceiling rises dramatically. The foundation is already there—once everything syncs, she becomes extremely difficult to defend.

Reisha Mitchell | Proformance | 2030

Mitchell plays with confidence, creativity, and flair—but it’s controlled creativity. She scores in multiple ways and is a gifted passer capable of delivering difficult reads with ease.

She uses her body well to protect the ball on drives and to shield shot blockers when finishing. Her ability to blend style with substance makes her dangerous in open space.

Wailea Freitas | Proformance | 2030

Freitas brings physicality, effort, and toughness every time she steps on the floor. She rebounds aggressively, sets solid screens, and understands timing as a roller—whether diving to the rim or slipping into space.

She defends with grit and embraces her role. Players like her elevate teams because they do the work that doesn’t always show up in box scores.

Chrislynn Smith | Vegas Bulldogs | 2030

Smith plays bigger than her size. Rugged, athletic, and fearless, she competes physically against larger opponents without backing down.

Her toughness and willingness to absorb contact allow her to stay impactful in high-intensity games. She embodies competitive grit.

Quinice Trainer | West Coast Reign | 2031

Trainer is a smooth slashing guard who thrives attacking the rim. She has a good variety of finishes and plays with confidence despite being a smaller guard.

Her ability to score efficiently around the basket makes her a consistent offensive threat.

Ellie Curtis | Vegas Elite | 2030

Curtis is a versatile 6’1” wing with strong hands, solid handle, and high basketball IQ. She scores at all three levels—showing comfort with her back to the basket, consistency from deep, and strong rebounding instincts.

She understands spacing, reads mismatches, and plays with finesse. Her versatility allows her to impact the game in multiple lineups.

Makena Ramos | Lady Dream | 2030

Ramos is a proven scorer who can heat up quickly. Her footwork coming off screens is advanced, and she pairs that with the ability to score in isolation using a deceptive first step.

She defends with grit and confidence and doesn’t shy away from responsibility. Leading scorer at the event for a reason—she scores in bunches and understands how to hunt her spots.

Emma Powell | Lady Dream | 2030

The most impactful overall player at the event. Powell is a defensive tone-setter who changes games with pressure alone. She picks up full court, disrupts ball handlers, and forces rushed decisions simply by being present.

Offensively, she shoots it with confidence, attacks the rim explosively, and embraces contact. Around 6’0”, athletic, fast, and relentless. A true two-way difference-maker and our #1 ranked 2030 in California.

Janai Turner | Lady Dream | 2030

Turner’s 6’5” frame, soft hands, and developing skill package make her a long-term prospect with serious upside. She showed touch on jump hooks, comfort with a one-leg fadeaway, and strong rebounding instincts.

She passes well from the high post and understands spacing. As she continues to grow into her body, her impact will multiply.

Kolbi Evans | Dream | 2030

Evans is one of the most underrated defenders in the event. She has mastered physical perimeter defense without fouling—an advanced skill.

Her anticipation, lateral movement, and timing are elite. Offensively she knocks down open threes, finishes through contact, and plays with consistent effort. A complete competitor.

Blakely Greenway | North Tartan | 2033

Blakely Greenway deserves a deeper conversation.

This is a player whose presence is felt immediately—not because of theatrics, but because of expectation. She plays with an internal standard that is obvious from the opening possession. There is no fear in her game. No hesitation. No shrinking moments.

She is assertive and confident offensively, capable of shooting the ball with range and conviction. Her mechanics are clean, repeatable, and unafraid of pressure. She moves with purpose, attacks space decisively, and does not back down from older, stronger, or more physically developed players.

What separates Blakely is not just skill—it’s competitive clarity. She knows who she is as a player and plays accordingly. She communicates, she competes on every possession, and she expects to win her matchup regardless of circumstance.

Coming from an elite athletic family, that competitive DNA is unmistakable. She plays nonstop, embraces contact, and carries herself like someone who expects greatness rather than hopes for it. I don’t throw around “it factor” lightly—but hers is undeniable. This is a player whose trajectory points straight up.

Avery Clark | North Tartan | 2033

Clark is the type of player every coach wants. She gets the 50–50 balls, makes clutch plays, and closes space defensively with urgency and intelligence.

She plays with passion, poise, and feel well beyond her years. A high-impact competitor who thrives in winning moments.

Yuriko “Yuri” Rain Factora | Proformance | 2031

Yuri plays up with confidence and joy. Strong for her size, fast, and relentless, she scores from anywhere on the floor.

Her motor never stops, and she competes with visible enthusiasm. Best player in her class at the event and a standout shooter as well. The future is bright.

Alayah Murray | East Coast United | 2032

One of the most complete young guards at the event. Long, intelligent, and fundamentally sound. She shoots with deep range, defends the perimeter aggressively, and makes high-level decisions consistently.

Her off-ball movement and anticipation are advanced. She makes winning plays without needing attention. A favorite evaluation.

Amia Jones-Alexander | Vegas Bulldogs | 2031

Plays fast but under control—a rare combination. Aggressive scorer who lives at the free-throw line and competes possession after possession.

She fits the Bulldogs’ identity perfectly: toughness, effort, and skill.

Jordyn Koike | Proformance | 2033

A relentless defender with offensive polish. Shoots it confidently, pressures the ball, and plays with nonstop energy.

Divine Tautofi | Proformance | 2033

Tautofi controls tempo naturally. Strong, composed, and intelligent, she uses her body well to finish inside and manipulate defenders on the perimeter.

She plays at whatever pace the game demands—an advanced trait that translates.
